The domestic political calendar is currently busy. The parties prepare for the election year and meet in small and large circles at party conferences and New Year’s meetings. “Everything is possible,” says “Krone” journalist Christoph Budin about the super election year 2024 in the krone.tv interview with Jana Pasching.
ÖVP Chancellor Karl Nehammer will present his “Austria Plan” in Wels on January 26: “Just like his speech a few months ago, he will try to distance himself politically from the Greens but also from the FPÖ.” We can also expect people to say, “The Greens won’t like it.” There will certainly be one or two “election treats” over the course of the year, Budin says. “And you will hope that economic data will improve by the middle of the year.”
Things have been quieter lately around Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler. “The distinction with the climate stickers has made headlines lately, as has the fact that there are no early elections for the National Council.” According to Budin, the Greens will have a difficult time this year because the focus is on the three parties. “The SPÖ with the new party leader, the FPÖ, which is making noise and the ÖVP, which is trying to pick itself up. There is a danger here that the Greens will be crushed in the three-way political battle,” Budin said.
“FPÖ not yet cemented in first place”
In terms of coalition technology, a two-party coalition would be difficult without the FPÖ, but also without the ÖVP. Yet Budin does not see the current poll figures set in stone: “I think the parties will move even closer together here. In my opinion, the FPÖ’s first place has not yet been definitively decided, even though it will be difficult to overtake Herbert Kickl.
