All of a sudden, refueling in Austria has become a luxury and more expensive than abroad. In order to prevent another price explosion for motorists, according to experts, the new CO2 tax should only come with the energy bonus on October 1.
Inflation has not “just” become a central theme for politicians: more and more consumers are affected by rising prices. According to Statistics Austria, we already maintained an inflation rate of eight percent in May. This is the highest value since 1975! The main drivers are energy costs and fuel prices.
It is therefore not surprising that the CO2 tax planned for 1 July 2022 is also under discussion. More and more experts and consumers are calling for a postponement of the introduction of the CO2 tax to 1 October – on which date the regional climate bonus will also be paid.
In Hungary only the locals can fill up cheaply
The situation in detail: The effect of the CO2 tax from 1 July would again be a price increase for diesel by nine and petrol by 8.2 cents per litre. That would mean that petrol would suddenly be more expensive here than in Germany, where the energy tax has just been lowered. Almost all other countries have already lowered taxes and excise duties on fuel, and in Hungary only the locals can refuel cheaply.
The ÖAMTC: “From July 1, Austria would be the only country where fuel prices would continue to rise as a result of the CO2 tax. Postponement of the CO2 tax to October 1 would be plausible.”
