About 120,000 passengers are affected by the strike at Lufthansa, a spokesperson announced on Monday. The company estimates that a total of 1,000 flights in Munich and Frankfurt will be canceled.
600 of these are in Frankfurt and 400 in Munich. As reported, the UFO cabin union called on Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cityline flight attendants to go on strike last weekend (see video above). There will be a strike on all departures from Frankfurt from 4am on Tuesday to 11pm and on all departures from Munich on Wednesday. Previously, more than 96 percent of the 19,000 flight attendants voted in favor of the strike.
Salary increase of 15 percent required
Above all, UFO demands 15 percent more wages for employees over a contract period of 18 months, an inflation compensation bonus of 3,000 euros and higher allowances. For Lufthansa, the strike is just one of many collective labor disputes. Last week, Verdi’s ground crew went on strike, largely paralyzing Lufthansa’s passenger traffic. Negotiations will take place with Verdi again next Wednesday.
AUA not affected
Flights operated by Lufthansa subsidiary Austrian Airlines are not affected. The long-distance railways in Germany also went on strike on Tuesday. This is also not the first strike in recent times.
