Savings must be made: finding staff for the delicatessen is a difficult task

Spar has hundreds of vacancies open in Upper Austria! Managing director Jakob Leitner reveals how the food retail chain wants to take advantage of the stuttering job engine in other sectors and score points with interns. And he also talks about where it is particularly difficult to find new employees.

The construction sector is in crisis, and things are also becoming noticeably more difficult for industrial companies, leading to internal reductions in working hours, more holiday discounts and, in some cases, job losses.

Can companies that have not filled hundreds of jobs for a long time now benefit from this situation? “We feel a slight improvement,” says Jakob Leitner, boss of Spar Upper Austria, “but we still have about 250 open positions.”

The retail chain is looking for employees in various areas. Where is it particularly difficult to get new colleagues on board? “Where service takes place, that is the deli departments,” says Leitner, “this requires special training.” The aim is to help new colleagues find their way more easily through a more intensive and better organized starting phase.

What makes it difficult: “There are very few trained deli workers in the labor market, even though we already manage to target the market of dissatisfied people.” The 63-year-old explains: “Our focus is therefore on getting career changers and getting them into good training.”

In the battle for students, Spar increasingly relies on job tours that take young people directly to the stores, where they in turn get to know those responsible for the students: “You don’t make a decision based on a Tik Tok video – personal contact is made just the difference.”
