For BMW, the engine factory in Steyr is the largest in the group. A further €1 billion will be invested by 2030 to make it a center for high-performance electric propulsion. But there is also growth in petrol and diesel. BMW is already our third largest manufacturer in terms of turnover.
The 4,700 employees at the Steyr factory assembled more than 1.2 million engines last year, 8% more than before. This created 200 additional jobs and a record turnover of €4.2 billion. And there were increases in both petrol engines (accounting for 3/4 of production) and diesel engines. “We are continuously developing them further. For the global market, and because there will be a revision of the EU decision in 2026, which in fact provides for a ban on the registration of new combustion engines from 2035,” says factory manager Klaus von Moltke. The fact that BMW is one of the few manufacturers to rely on all drive technology has now proven itself. Nevertheless, e-mobility is turning on the turbo: last year, 361 million euros were invested in Steyr, or one million per day. The total amount must reach one billion by 2030 to develop the factory into a knowledge center for high-quality electric drives. “This is up to 40% more efficient than today, allowing for greater range or smaller batteries,” von Moltke explains. Production of the new super engines will begin in autumn 2025. They will then be installed in a generation of vehicles fully developed for e-mobility. “In addition, the six models have a new digital concept and are 100% recyclable.” From 2030, 50% of all BMWs are expected to have electric motors, so instead of a third now, half of the development team in Steyr will be working on this technology.
This is well received by customers. Last year, fully electric BMWs and Minis sold 72% more. “That made us number 2 after Tesla, and in recent months even number 1,” beams Christian Morawa, head of BMW Austria. Overall, the Munich-based company is also the leader in the premium market and even the third largest manufacturer overall. “We have gained market share. The latest model range and our openness to technology prove their worth.” An example is the upcoming 5 Series Touring, which will be offered in five variants (petrol, diesel, also as a hybrid, electric motor). Overall, BMW is one of our largest companies with a turnover of almost €9 billion and 5,200 employees. Since its founding, the group has invested €8.8 billion in Austria.
