With a new hydrogen strategy, Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) wants to make domestic industry less dependent on Russian natural gas: the federal government will therefore invest at least half a billion euros in climate-neutral hydrogen by 2030.
This must be produced with green electricity instead of gas. By then, 80 percent of the hydrogen should be “green.” In particular, the cement, steel and chemical industries have hardly any other options for replacing Russian gas for their production.
“By 2030, we want to set up production plants of one gigawatt of hydrogen in Austria,” says Gewessler, who is making 40 million euros per year available for this alone. In addition, infrastructure and the import of hydrogen are needed.
