Global ranking – Most popular job sites: Austria in 11th place

Date:

Austria is in high demand among international job seekers due to its high quality of life and quality of employment opportunities. Out of 185 countries, Austria ranks eleventh among the most popular work locations in the world.

Viewed by city, the federal capital Vienna has fallen to 23rd place in popularity among international job seekers. In 2020, Vienna was ranked 22nd in the city rankings and in 2018 it was 13th. In total, more than 150,000 employees were surveyed for the ‘Decoding Global Talent’ study, including 1,700 in Austria.

Visas and work permits act as brake pads
However, there is a need for improvement in the area of visas and work permits. Companies must proactively provide support for bureaucratic hurdles. With its high quality of life, Austria has a trump card in the global battle for the brightest minds.

Eleven percent are looking for a job outside Austria
However, research by consultancy firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in collaboration with job fair Stepstone shows that respondents in Austria are significantly less willing to leave the country for a job: less than half would like to work abroad and just under eleven percent are currently actively looking for a job outside Austria.

Hungarians, Bosnians and Slovenes are flocking to Austria
Austrians are most likely to go to Germany and Switzerland to work, followed by the US and Italy. Austria, in turn, is a particularly attractive country for people from Hungary (36 percent), Bosnia and Herzegovina (30 percent), Slovenia (22 percent), Serbia (20 percent) and Germany (14 percent).

However, the share of people generally open to moving abroad for a job has fallen to 63 percent. Before the corona pandemic in 2018, this share was 78 percent.
