The EU will ban the sale of combustion engine vehicles from 2035

The sector shares the reduction in emissions, but asks for realistic deadlines to ensure its viability

The European Union took another step this Wednesday to reduce emissions, with the adoption of a directive banning the sale of combustion engine vehicles from 2035. The European Parliament has ratified the text – with 339 votes in favour, 249 against and 24 abstentions – and will mean the end of sales in Europe of cars and vans with combustion engines.

The proposal includes gradual progress with the interim target of reducing polluting emissions from new cars and vans by 55% by 2030 and to zero five years later. However, the document introduces a review clause for 2027, when lawmakers can “better assess technological progress”, to ensure the viability of Europe’s manufacturing industry.

In practice, and in the absence of this future revision, the Directive means an end to the sale of diesel and petrol cars and vans; as well as all those emitting CO2, such as hybrids and plug-in hybrids. For example, from 2035, brands will only be able to sell electric cars and hydrogen fuel cell cars in Europe.

In Spain, the Congress of Deputies last year approved the law on climate change and energy transition, which included the target to stop the sale of commercial vehicles with combustion engines by 2040. Now the environment ministers of the twenty-seven must make public by the end of this month, before negotiations with the European Parliament are started. The final law is expected to be ready in the fall.
