According to insiders, Amazon offers concessions in the antitrust dispute with the EU. Data from the company’s Marketplace retailer platform would be shared with merchants and visibility of competitors’ offerings on the platform would be improved, people familiar with the process said. For example, the world’s largest online retailer hopes to avoid a possible cartel fine from the European Union, which could amount to ten percent of its turnover.
The EU commission opened proceedings against Amazon in 2020, accusing the online giant of abusing its size and market power to promote its own products and gain an advantage over competitors who also operate on the Amazon platform. The studies also revolve around whether Amazon grants benefits to retailers that use Amazon logistics in shipping.
According to insiders, EU antitrust authorities will be collecting reviews from Amazon users and competitors in the coming weeks. A decision is expected by the end of the year. The European Commission and Amazon declined to comment. The company had said in the past it represented less than one percent of the global retail market and disagreed with the European Commission’s assessment.
