Google has lost a major battle in the US competition war. At the heart of the trial were lucrative deals that made Google’s search engine the default in web browsers.
On Monday, a judge in Washington ruled that the internet giant created a monopoly and systematically excluded its competitors. Google initially declined to comment on the ruling. The lawsuit was filed by the U.S. Department of Justice and dozens of U.S. states.
The U.S. government accused Google of having “built an impenetrable wall around its search engine monopoly” through its practices. For example, Google paid Apple billions to keep the Google search engine default in the iPhone’s Safari browser. Although users have the ability to change the search engine, many stick with the default setting.
Google responded to this, but users came to Google because they were satisfied with the quality of the search results.
The lawsuit was originally filed under the presidency of Donald Trump, and the administration of his successor Joe Biden has continued to pursue the process with determination.
