Despite inflation, people have not yet saved on their vacations. Several tour operators report that the demand for all-inclusive offers and for hotels with higher star categories has increased recently. Spain with the popular Canary Islands was especially popular with all-inclusive offers in winter.
According to several German tour operators, people are spending more money on their holidays. “Inflation and the energy crisis have not led to a cheap boom,” says Sven Schikarsky, head of product at Dertour and its sister brands ITS and Meiers Weltreisen. For example, 82 percent of holidaymakers booked a 4 or 5-star hotel with a tour operator for the months of November 2022 to the end of February 2023. That was slightly more than in the summer of last year and also more than in the winter of 2019/20.
All-inclusive offers were also more popular. 37 percent of holidaymakers used them in winter. Spain with the Canary Islands was especially popular. At the tourism group TUI, the average price of trips sold is currently five percent higher than last year, with 8.3 million bookings for the summer so far (more than 84 million people live in Germany, note). This is also more than last year.
Both the 2022/23 winter season and the 2023 summer season were only slightly below pre-coronavirus levels in March. According to Travel Data + Analytics (TDA), sales growth was higher than would be warranted in summer alone on the basis of higher travel prices and higher spending by sunbathers.
A clear majority of Austrians plan travel
According to a new survey by the ÖAMTC, 78 percent of people in Austria plan to go on holiday at least once this year. Popular travel destinations are Italy, Croatia, Germany and Greece. On the other hand, 42 percent of those surveyed want to stay in Austria, with Styria, Carinthia and Salzburg leading the way.
