Visiting AIT – Karner demonstrated the AI tool against fake news

Date:

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) visited the Australian Institute of Technology (AIT) on Wednesday. The reason is the fight against digital disinformation. The department head is mainly concerned with raising awareness of the dangers of “deepfake”. AIT has been running a project called defalsif-AI since 2020.

Media forensic tools are developed here that allow users to make a reliable first assessment of the credibility and authenticity of text, image, video or audio material on the Internet. Artificial intelligence is used for this. The project focuses in particular on politically motivated disinformation and a prototype was presented to the minister.

Minister warns against destabilization
Karner said during his visit to the AIT that deepfake and fake news target disinformation and thus the destabilization of democratic structures. All measures taken against these developments have protected democracy and the institutions that protect fundamental rights and freedoms.

‘Deepfake’ is understood to mean media content that appears to be essentially realistic, but which is actually fake produced by artificial intelligence, for example by exchanging faces or voices. Austria drew up an action plan some time ago in this regard and on the subject of “fake news”.
