Deadly flames – cruel accident on the Vorarlberg A14

Date:

In the night from Thursday to Friday, a fatal traffic accident occurred on the A14 Rheintal before the exit Lauterach towards Germany.

According to the current status of the investigation, a 36-year-old German motorist from Feldkirch was driving alone in her car on the A14 towards Germany around 11.50 pm. At the same time, an articulated vehicle was traveling in the same direction in the three-lane area.

For reasons unknown, the woman ran into the truck, which apparently immediately caused her vehicle to catch fire. However, the driver of the car was probably unconscious from the violent impact and therefore was unable to save himself from the vehicle, which started to catch fire.

Failed rescue operation
The driver of the articulated vehicle rushed to the rescue and tried to free the unconscious woman from the car by, among other things, cutting the seat belt. Unfortunately, this attempt failed due to the increasing fire. It was only when the fire service arrived that the vehicle, which went up completely in flames, was extinguished and the woman who was trapped in the vehicle was rescued. The next of kin and those involved in the accident were taken care of by the crisis intervention team. The A14 was closed to all traffic until about 2 a.m. The partial closure was lifted at 3.20 am.

The Dornbirn fire brigade was deployed with five vehicles and 30 emergency services, the Red Cross with three vehicles and nine paramedics, the Hohenems highway maintenance service with three vehicles and the federal police with six vehicles and twelve employees.
