The municipal energy supplier Wien Energie promises only non-Russian gas for its customers in the coming year. In the past few days, the purchase of ten TWh from non-Russian sources has been secured.
Russian gas, which Wien Energie will purchase from Russia under current contracts until 2027, will be sold on the stock exchange. Wien Energie CEO Michael Strebl and Deputy for Economic Affairs Peter Hanke announced this on Friday.
“We have set a standard”
“Of course, we want to continue to supply all Viennese with non-Russian gas after 2025,” Strebl explains. This has now been fixed for 2025, which “sets a standard” and “sends a signal to the market.”
However, many questions remain about the gas market for 2026. For example, whether gas will still be supplied to Europe via Ukraine and what a gas labelling system will look like at EU level.
