Since last month – Despite the recession: the number of unemployed has fallen

Date:

The economic researchers and companies had emphasized it again and again: the recession has now reached the sector and is also reflected in the figures of the employment service. In September, 33,469 people were looking for work in Upper Austria. That is almost 5,000 more than in September 2023, but 2,000 fewer than in August.

In September, 33,469 people were looking for a job and another 10,119 were in training – Upper Austria’s Public Employment Service published these figures on Tuesday. While the number of unemployed rose by almost 5,000 year-on-year, vacancies continue to fall. Last month, 20,911 unfilled vacancies were reported by the AMS Upper Austria.

AMS-OÖ director Iris Schmidt speaks of a “beginning of hardening of fundamental unemployment”. Who is currently most affected by the challenging economic situation? Schmidt is talking about people with a non-German mother tongue and multiple mediation restrictions.

In addition to looking at the figures, Schmidt also notes ‘a labor exchange process’ in companies: ‘This is also reflected in a noticeable increase in the number of new jobs in relation to the number of people ending up unemployed, with a slight decrease in employment development.” This is also reflected in the figures: in August the AMS reported 35,531 people without jobs, now there are 33,469 – a decrease of almost 2,000.

Which sectors in Upper Austria experienced the strongest increase in the number of job seekers? Reference is made here to the production of goods (plus 1250), trade (plus 979) and temporary employment (plus 640).
