In 2025, Austria will introduce a deposit system for plastic bottles and beverage cans. Although the majority of retailers are prepared for major investments, customers still have questions. We make it clear how the deposit system works and what else will change – also with regard to the remaining plastic waste.
Retailers have been preparing for the introduction of the one-off deposit for more than a year. “We know almost everything now,” explains Simon Mair, food trade lobbyist at the Tyrolean Chamber of Commerce. This was preceded by several information meetings and repeated questions about the final details. “A lot of coordination was needed,” Mair reports, “especially the smaller retailers just don’t know what to expect.”
