It’s one of the biggest mysteries: how much do Austrians inherit? What wealth do the top ten percent of heirs receive on average? How many are still in debt? And what does the “typical inheritance” actually look like? The “crown” has the numbers.
Because the tax authorities in Austria do not collect inheritance taxes, there are no official data on inheritances – not even from the Central Bureau of Statistics Austria. But an economist from WU Vienna and her team have now evaluated thousands of inheritance procedures – and are making the results available to ‘Krone’ readers. In a clear table we show for the first time how much the ‘richest’ ten percent of the heirs receive on average, how much the next ten percent, etc. – up to the ‘poorest’ ten percent, who are even still in debt. Also: that’s actually how big an average inheritance is.
