4 days off – innkeeper desperate: No cook despite a 3-day week

Date:

Although there is a lot of free time, a popular restaurant in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt cannot find staff to work in the kitchen.

Eight hours a day, five days a week – 40 hours in total. This is roughly what the typical work week looks like for most workers in our country. While the SPÖ and the trade union see the 4-day working week with only 32 hours as the working model of the future, a restaurant in Leopoldstadt already relies on the 3-day working week.

“From the start, we had a four-day working week for our service employees. For a few years now it has only been three days and that has been very well received,” says Sperlling boss Andreas Sael. Ultimately, this ensures the perfect balance between work and private life. But Sael is still plagued by employee concerns. He is desperately looking for a chef and has been for almost six months.

“We really tried everything”
The position in the kitchen is currently advertised on all platforms – so far without success. “We really tried everything. “Nobody is signing up,” says the restaurateur resignedly. Although there were some candidates, most were not qualified. Among them was a mason who did not even know how to cut and process meat.

In any case, a completed training as a chef is a must. Some applicants also have utopian salary expectations. For the job as ‘party leader’ in Sperling you can expect between 1,800 and 1,900 euros net per month.
