Food chain warns it “won’t withstand” another transport interruption

Date:

Given the risk of another strike due to the rise in fuel prices, the sector expresses its “maximum concern” about the impact this would have on businesses and consumers

Carriers have asked the government to take new measures to alleviate the high costs they have to bear, especially as a result of the rise in fuel prices. That same week, the National Committee for Freight Transport (CNTC) – the industry’s highest representative body – sent a letter to the Ministry of Transport requesting that the bonus of 20 cents per liter of fuel be extended until December 31 and trucks until 7, 5 tons, the subsidy is 40 cents.

At the moment there is no alluding to the strike, as the Platform for the Defense of Road Transport did a few days earlier – promoters of the strikes last March – if “more effective” measures are not taken to reduce the costs of carriers and carriers. to lower. don’t lose it.

Faced with this delicate situation, the agri-food chain warns that they “cannot tolerate” another strike in the transport sector. In a joint statement, agricultural organizations (Asaja, Coag, UPA and agri-food cooperatives) and business organizations (FIAB, AECOC, Aces, Anged, Asedas, Cedecarne, Fedepesca, Hotelería de España and Marcas de Restauración) pointed out that the strikes in March caused problems in the supply chain of basic products that are no longer allowed. “We show the utmost concern for the serious consequences that another strike could have for businesses and consumers,” they say.

In this way, the representatives of the agri-food sector recall that they provide an “essential service” for the food supply to the population, an essential character recognized during the pandemic. In addition, the agricultural sector is in the middle of the summer fruit season and a large part of Spanish production is destined for international markets, so a transport interruption would mean a loss of prestige and export destinations.

And while acknowledging that society as a whole is in a “very difficult situation” due to high inflation, they assure that the agri-food chain is making a major effort to pass on “as little as possible” to consumers the rise in energy prices, fuels, fertilizers and raw materials.

“Another strike would mean the losses of many operators in the sector, which are barely weathering an unprecedented economic and geopolitical situation,” they explained in the statement.
