It is now coming up in the competition between Google and OpenAI. Now, with the help of artificial intelligence, ChatGPT aims to make Google’s search function obsolete – and thus the search engine giant’s core product.
The explosive duel is about market shares and advertising revenue, which Google currently mainly collects. An expansion for its AI product ChatGPT should now turn the tide in favor of OpenAI. OpenAI announced on Thursday that artificial intelligence (AI) can now also search the internet for answers.
The search does not stop after the first request
The company has apparently decided not to introduce a separate search engine. In the summer, OpenAI presented a prototype, “SearchGPT”, whose technology will be integrated into ChatGPT’s new search function.
According to the information, in the future the AI will provide links to the websites where information comes from. Users can also ask follow-up questions to improve answers. The new feature will initially be offered to premium customers and will also be available to other users in the coming months.
Can search engine giant Google be cracked?
To date, approximately 90 percent of all Internet searches are conducted through Google. As a result, the lion’s share of online advertising revenue flows to subsidiary Alphabet. The biggest challenger in this area is OpenAI partner Microsoft, which has integrated ChatGPT into its search engine Bing.
But many start-ups also want to get in on the action. Google counters this with its own AI, ‘Gemini’, which it builds into its search engine.
