The dispute over salary adjustments for the public sector has now reached the next level of escalation: the ÖGB has given permission to strike! A demonstration at Ballhausplatz has already been announced for November 26, with tens of thousands of participants expected. What experiences have you had with strikes and similar protest measures?
The budgetary situation is likely to make this year’s negotiations even more difficult. One thing is clear: government spending must be reduced. According to calculations by Agenda Austria, each percentage point less would save 180 million. On the other hand, there are the demands of civil servants and the signaling effect for current and possible future civil servants. For example, a round of zero wages could further exacerbate the severe teacher shortage. If both sides do not deviate from their demands, a strike seems inevitable.
What experiences have you had with strikes and other protest measures? Do you think the threat of a strike by civil servants is justified? Do you think there are strikes too often or not often enough in Austria? We look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences in the comments!
