An increasing number of companies in Germany are using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, especially the large ones. Within a year, the share rose from 12 to 20 percent, the Federal Statistical Office announced on Monday.
The use of AI was first explored in 2021; then the share was 11 percent. This also includes legal entities with at least ten employees.
Large companies with 250 or more employees are using AI technologies much more often than medium and small companies. One in two large companies (48 percent) uses AI, but only about one in four (28 percent) midsize companies with 50 to 249 employees. For small companies with ten to 49 employees, this is only 17 percent. AI is being used more often in all size classes than last year.
Text mining tools are widely used
Companies that use AI most often use technologies for analyzing written language or text mining (48 percent). This is followed by speech recognition (47 percent) and natural language generation (34 percent). These technologies are mainly used for marketing or sales (33 percent), for production or service processes (25 percent), for organizing administrative processes or management of companies (24 percent) and for accounting, control or financial management (24 percent). .
Of the companies that have so far refrained from using AI, 18 percent have already considered its use. When asked about the reasons for not using it, these companies mainly cited a lack of knowledge (71 percent), uncertainty about the legal consequences (58 percent) and concerns about maintaining data protection and privacy (53 percent).
Issues with data availability or quality (45 percent), incompatibility with existing equipment, software and systems (44 percent), as well as excessive costs (28 percent) and ethical considerations (23 percent) are also commonly cited. 21 percent of these companies do not find the use of artificial intelligence in their business useful.
