Even before the winter season in Tyrol has really started, the tourist industry is screaming again. The reason for this is the glaring shortage of skilled labor. New regulations are needed.
“The companies are groaning because of the lack of staff,” says World Cup division chairman Alois Rainer, “the constant begging about the quota scheme has not brought us any progress so far. The future federal government must finally address this difficult issue.”
“Urgent action needed”
As hotel sector chairman Franz Staggl calculates, there are currently 2,000 vacancies in tourism. There is an ‘urgent need for action’.
His suggestions: “Either we fundamentally abolish the quota system and allow the positions to be filled by third-country nationals after a failed replacement process by the AMS, or we increase the quotas to levels that give the industry more room to maneuver.”
The current scheme provides for a total of 1,249 seasonal migrant workers from third countries for the tourist region of Tyrol, and 4,495 for the whole of Austria.
