Carriers decide today whether to resume the strike

Date:

The National Platform that has pushed for the March mobilizations will meet with its employees this Sunday if they again cease their activity due to the rise in costs

Fuels are at an all-time high and carriers are suffering the consequences. Petrol this Sunday marked an average price of 2.13 euros per liter, while diesel reached 2.10 euros, so the government subsidy of 20 cents per liter has been diluted, especially for this sector that mobilized in the month of March, forcing the food distribution in certain areas of the country.

For this reason, Manuel Hernández, the president of the Platform for the Defense of Transport and the leader of the strikes, assured a few days ago three months ago, a few days ago that if the government did not remedy this situation, they would be forced to “stop the strike that was suspended on April 2. In statements to this newspaper, Hernández explained that if the government’s promises are not fulfilled — including the law forbidding hiring transport services at a loss — the Platform will return to “infinite unemployment”.

The threat is no joke. That same Sunday, the Platform will consult with its employees in all its provincial delegations whether they will resume the mobilizations. If so, the reactivation of the strike would be in July, though the day has yet to be determined, as they have given the executive until June 30 as the deadline to get a response to their demands.

The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda has pledged, in the context of the strike that took place in March, to pass before July a law banning work at a loss, based on the principles of the already existing food chain law. 30, so there would be a month left.

In any case, they explain from the sector that the decision to work loss-making lies with each of the carriers who decide to provide a service to a customer at an already agreed price. But due to the competition between companies and self-employed people, assignments are accepted that are not profitable with the current fuel prices.

For its part, the National Road Transport Committee (CNTC), the sector’s highest representative body, last week sent a letter to the ministry requesting assistance to the sector, such as the 40 cents per liter fuel subsidy or the extension of direct aid. to carriers. On the other hand, for the time being, they are not considering calling a strike that the agri-food sector has already warned would be “unaffordable”.
