The activities of “Salzburg Chocolate” have now finally been stopped. The factory’s machines go to 30 different suppliers. The company recently had 65 employees.
The ‘Real Salzburger Mozartkugel’ from ‘Mirabell’ no longer rolls off the assembly line in Grödig near Salzburg since today, Friday: six months after the announcement, the confectionery manufacturer ‘Salzburg Chocolate’ has ceased its activities. There has been strong criticism from the union recently because there is no social plan for the 65 employees. Last week there was another protest in front of the factory.
Operation of the building is open
The machines that have been standing still since today will not remain in Grödig for long. “The machines are sold worldwide. We have found about 30 different buyers, the machines are sold in Europe, outside Europe as far as Egypt and Mauritius,” said director Friedrich Plail on Friday.
However, the use of the building is still open. We are currently in discussions with two interested parties, but there is no concrete purchase offer on the table, says Plail. The American brand owner Mondelez will continue to produce the Mirabell Mozartkugel, but where is not known. “We would have loved to know where the Mozartkugel would be produced in the future, but unfortunately, despite repeated requests, we were not told,” said the director.
Factory sales in Grödig will continue for the time being. ‘As long as we still have bullets and coins, we’ll leave it open. But things look very bad, demand is high. We are stormed every day, which is very good. And I assume that by the end of next week we will no longer have any goods to sell,” Plail said.
“Real” but not original
By the way, “The Real Salzburger Mozartkugel” is not the original. The sweet was invented in 1890 by the Salzburg pastry chef Paul Fürst. The pastry shop in Salzburg still exists – now in its fifth generation – and still sells the “Original Salzburger Mozartkugel”.
