The Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) announced the death of its former president Claus Raidl on Tuesday. They were said to be “deeply affected”. The former top manager, who was also active in the steel industry, was 82 years old.
Claus Raidl shaped Austrian industrial and economic policy for decades; from September 1, 2008 to August 31, 2018 he was chairman of the General Council of the OeNB. Raidl, who comes from Karpfenberg in Styria, previously worked at Voest-alpine, first as CFO and later as CEO.
Top manager in the steel industry
In 1991 he became CEO of Böhler-Uddeholm AG and led the group until 2010. Raidl played an important role in the company’s rise to the top of the industry. From 2007 to 2010 he was also a member of the board of directors of voestalpine AG.
Mahrer: “Great personality”
“Dr. “During his two terms in office, Claus J. Raidl created an internationally recognized and modern central bank,” current OeNB President Harald Mahrer recalled in a press release. “As chairman, Dr. Claus J. Raidl was more than just chairman of the supervisory board, he was a great personality and, with his extensive knowledge and experience, supported the board of the OeNB with the then governor Dr. Ewald Nowotny on comprehensive reform measures and innovations in corporate management.” Deep condolences are expressed to the relatives.
Raidl died, as it was said, “after a long, serious illness.” Claus Raidl was married and had three sons, one of whom is the Viennese ÖVP politician Gregor Raidl.
