Almost ten years ago, the Tyrolean state parliament took the fundamental decision to build the new Management Center Innsbruck (MCI). In the years that followed, the project became a ‘Neverending Story’. Now it is clear: the new construction will not be built.
“The MCI is a lighthouse in the university landscape in Austria. The employees, teachers and students fill the MCI with life, knowledge and innovation. That is why the state of Tyrol has a clear commitment to MCI as an enterprising university. There have been plans for a new building since 2008,” says LH Anton Mattle on his social media channels.
But nothing will come of a new lighthouse – i.e. a new MCI building.
More cost-effective renovation planned
“After years of discussions, due to legal concerns and given the tense financial situation of the municipalities and the state, the project will not move forward,” Mattle continued. He instructed the responsible constructor to make preparations to implement a more cost-effective renovation and densification of the existing MCI main site and the remaining locations.
“The goal is to secure the 3,300 study places planned for the MCI in the original project,” Mattle concludes.
