The environmental protection organization GLOBAL 2000 criticizes the fact that the federal government’s real estate renovation financing is not transparent – and has done the math itself. Conclusion: Subsidies for thermal renovation and replacement of boilers have never been as high as they are now.
With an estimated total cost of around 100,000 euros for an extensive renovation including heating replacement, homeowners can collect between 58,000 and 93,800 euros depending on the state.
Since the beginning of this year, the federal government has financed up to 50 percent of the costs of thermal insulation and replacement of windows and up to 75 percent of the costs of replacing heating systems in the form of one-off subsidies. These measures are supported not only by the federal government, but also by the states. A combination of federal and state funding is possible, Global 2000 says.
The highest subsidies await in Tyrol
As an example, the thermal renovation of a single-family house is given (comprehensive thermal insulation, window replacement and conversion to deep bore heat pump, total cost 100,000 euros): The federal subsidy amounts to 58,000 euros. When combining federal and state funding, the total subsidy is highest in Tyrol. A total of 93,800 euros will be awarded a one-off subsidy. The subsidy is also relatively high in Styria at 86,500 euros.
Significantly more than three quarters of the costs are also in Vorarlberg (83,600 euros), Salzburg (83,500 euros) and Carinthia (83,200 euros), while the subsidy in Vienna (68,800 euros) and Upper Austria (67,200 euros) is considerably lower . Burgenland (61,500 euros) is ahead of Lower Austria, where one-off subsidies were abolished at the beginning of 2024. “This means that in Lower Austria you can only rely on the one-off subsidy from the federal government, which can provide another financing of 58,000 euros,” the environmentalists said in a press release on Thursday.
