Despite the economic crisis, Voestalpine continues with its billion-dollar green steel project. Next week a milestone will be reached in the construction work in Leoben-Donawitz: in a few years the first blast furnace will go out. This causes CO2 emissions to drop dramatically.
While industrial history will be written in three years’ time, today it looks like a seek-and-find picture on a construction site. Six cranes, excavators, heavy trucks, building materials everywhere and many workers. On the east side of the steel mill in Donawitz, Voestalpine is building an electric arc furnace that is expected to be put into operation in the spring of 2027. He no longer needs coal or coke to produce steel, but a lot of scrap – and especially green energy.
