The Association of Statistical Professionals accuses Economy, which was already studying its possible replacement, of “an attack on the independence” of this public institution
The president of the National Institute of Statistics (INE), Juan Manuel Rodríguez Poo, announced his resignation to his management team on Monday, citing personal reasons he did not specify. However, the news coincides with various information that has happened in recent days regarding a rebuilding of this government body that the Ministry of Economy – on which it depends – is said to be preparing, after criticism from its own head. Nadia Calviño and other government voices oppose the INE’s latest economic readings that downgraded the Executive’s previous calculations.
Several high-level meetings were reportedly held over this delicate matter over the weekend, the ABC newspaper said, confirming that the interested party’s resignation was communicated to his employees via email. The decision of Rodríguez Poo’s deputy corresponds to Calviño, as it is a free appointment by the first vice president and head of economy, whose mandate also has no fixed term. Some sources point out that the chosen one could be Israel Arroyo, former Secretary of State for Social Security.
