Crowded Advent markets, closed shopping streets, long lines in front of the bars – mass tourism has complete control over Vienna. Like every year, the Christmas period attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors, and this number is constantly increasing. The Viennese groan, the economy rejoices.
Vienna is the Christmas capital of Europe par excellence. No other metropolis shines brighter during Advent, and virtually no other major city in the EU has more Christmas markets than here. Vienna is especially popular during the Christmas period with guests from Germany, Italy and Spain, but also with tourists from the US and increasingly from China. With an occupancy rate of 85 percent in December, hotels in Vienna will set a record: an increase of eight percent compared to the previous year.
