The new deposit system for PET bottles and aluminum cans will start in Austria on January 1. The “Krone” discussed with Roman Postl, the head of Central and Eastern Europe at deposit system manufacturer Tomra, how well prepared the local supermarkets are and what specifically awaits consumers.
From January 1, 2025, a deposit system for disposable PET containers and aluminum cans will apply in Austria. A deposit of 25 cents is then due upon purchase for all these beverage bottles or cans, provided that the new deposit logo with the “€” sign is already on the product. However, this will not be the case for many containers at the beginning of this year. Beverage manufacturers may still supply goods to supermarkets without a deposit logo until the end of March. From April 1, only deliveries with a down payment are possible.
