The pro-Russian hacker group Noname057(16) carried out a large-scale attack on Italian targets for the second day in a row on Sunday. This time they targeted the websites of banks such as Banca Intesa and Monte Paschi di Siena (MPS), ports such as those in Trieste and IT companies such as Olidata, the Italian cybersecurity agency reported.
On Sunday it said it was working to support those affected in restoring functionality. The actions – so-called DDos attacks that cause temporary service disruptions – were also supervised by another hacker group, the Palestinian Alixsec.
Previously targeted ministries
On Saturday, the pro-Russian hacker group had already attacked the websites of Italian ministries and institutions. The websites of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Transport, the stock exchange regulator Consob, the Carabinieri, the Navy, the Air Force and local transport companies in the cities of Rome, Palermo and Genoa were among the attacks.
Some websites reported that the disruptions lasted about an hour, but these were not particularly critical.
Hackers criticize Meloni for supporting Zelensky
Announcing their attack, the cybercriminals criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Telegram. “Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s continued full support to Ukraine during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his visit to Rome on Thursday. According to Meloni, Italy will help Ukraine defend its interests and achieve a just and lasting peace. “Italy must start by helping itself and especially its cybersecurity,” the report said.
Recently, repeated cases of hacker attacks on important databases have been reported in Italy. At the end of December, an attack was carried out on the IT systems of Milan’s two airports, Linate and Malpensa. The website on which takeoffs and landings can be followed was no longer available, but flight operations continued as usual. Italy wants to tackle cybercrime. The powers of the national authority to combat cybercrime should be expanded.
