The British government announced on Friday that it has signed a deal with engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce for nuclear submarine reactors worth nine billion pounds (10.65 billion euros).
According to the Ministry of Defense in London, the eight-year contract includes the development, production and maintenance of nuclear reactors to power the country’s nuclear submarines.
4,000 jobs secured with deal
In addition, 4,000 jobs will be secured and more than 1,000 new jobs created in Britain. At the same time, the deal promotes the country’s security and economy.
Minister of Defense: “Ultimate security”
The agreement shows that defense can be used as an engine for growth, Defense Minister John Healey said, according to the British news agency PA. It is also a commitment to the country’s nuclear deterrent potential “as our ultimate protection in a more dangerous world.”
Submarines also carry nuclear weapons
Britain has a fleet of four submarines, both of which are nuclear-armed and carry nuclear weapons. One of these submarines continuously patrols the world’s oceans to respond to a nuclear attack on Britain.
