Expensive groceries – How do you save on daily groceries

Date:

The price increase is currently indispensable in the supermarket. The “Krone” shows how customers can still avoid the high prices.

The biggest wave of inflation since the 1970s is causing problems for households. Especially if you do your shopping every day, many people have to turn over every euro twice. No wonder, because those who do their shopping today pay nine percent more than a year ago. Oils and fats and meat in particular have clearly become more expensive, as has bread (see graph below).

Some increases are almost impossible to avoid, but sometimes it can be worth doing without meat (total plus 11.3 percent). When it comes to fruit, there are big differences: strawberries are a fifth more expensive, peaches are 27 percent cheaper.

In general, a few simple tips will help: Simple dishes and leftover recipes are cheaper. Never go to the supermarket hungry or without a shopping list. It often also helps to compare the products, to look at the prices per quantity and also to look at the bottom shelf. There are also always promotions for meat or drink. With apps like “Action Finder” you can find them with one click and set alarms.

Those who find it difficult to make ends meet despite all the savings measures, can also fall back on a network of social markets. Svjetlana Wisiak of Vinzi Markets says: “Every day 1600 people come to our ten markets. Food costs a maximum of one third of the normal price.” You can shop for 30 euros per week (goods value from 90 to 100 euros). Anyone who earns less than 1050 euros is entitled to a claim, for two-person households the limit is 1550 euros plus 150 euros per child. “The weekly purchases are arranged in such a way that a family can handle them well,” emphasizes Wisiak.

Too Good to Go: App against waste
The social markets save tons of food every day, and Too Good to Go also serves this purpose: the app allows users to save food left over at the end of the day. “You get a ten euro package for 2.99 euros, and one of 12 euros for 3.99 euros,” explains boss Georg Strasser. Partners include Spar, bakeries, hotels, restaurants and gas stations.

Due to the price increase, the number of users is increasing: “We have had 20 percent more demand in recent months,” says Strasser. If you want to pick up a package, book it in the app (be quick!), pay immediately and then pick it up. The content is then a “surprise”.
