Austria has been in the largest economic crazy people for decades, unemployment is increasing. Nevertheless, the shortage of trained employees at the same time in numerous companies.
In the past ten years, the lack of employees in numerous industries has even increased considerably, according to an analysis of the Austria agenda. The most important reason is that the baby orbiting generation also retires many trained specialists, in general the popularity of student training has decreased: in 1980 there were still around 200,000 students, the most recently it was just a little more than 100,000. “Moreover, there is a regional mismatch,” emphasizes economist Denes Kucera from the think tank agenda Austria. Unemployment is traditionally high in Vienna, while the demand for employees in Salzburg, Tyrol and Upper Austria is particularly high.
Many specialists among the baby boomers
AMS boss Johannes Kopf sees a “paradox that specialists misses despite increasing unemployment.” Demography-a lot of pension and the deterioration of working hours are the main reasons. Because although Austria is currently registering a record of employees, the number of hours worked in five years has not increased. “Pandemie has pushed many in part-time,” says agenda expert Kucera. If people work less on average, this also increases the shortage of skilled employees.
Nurses and technicians are required
For example, the shortage is great for electricians, 4638 unemployed come to 4347, a ratio of 1 to 1.07. In the case of technicians (engineers, forcing, etc.), 6318 are available unemployed people available at 4914. Outside technology and the vessel, the employees also lack in health professions. There are 7323 unemployed people at 6809. The defect using the caretaker’s example is even huge: only 705 unemployed nurses come to 2177 vacancies.
But where are the solutions for the problem? Demography will not change so quickly. However, politics still has levers. “We have to increase the potential for employees, improve employment in women and refugees in the labor market quickly and sustainably,” summarizes AMS Board Head. The part -time quota in Austria is very high with around 30 percent. According to Kucsera, this is mainly due to the progressive operating system, so that extra work for many pays too little. In general, the work factor must be relieved.
Politics can take countermeasures
But the lack of opportunities for childcare also have many women who remain partially. Kucsera also calls for a degressive unemployment benefit to increase the incentive to accept a job. To get the regional mismatch under control, a “mobility bonus” can also help the specialists who take larger routes. Moreover, the Austria Agenda again requires an increase in the pension extension to retire fewer employees.
Kopf also emphasizes that rapid integration of refugees in the labor market is important. They must learn basic skills, such as reading, writing or German. Immigrants must use the time of waiting for an asylum decision.
Red and white red card is required
In addition to the integration of refugees, targeted immigration of specialists from abroad is also a key, says Kucera. This can harm the shortage in many places. In 2024, the applications for the map with red white red increased considerably.
