Sales moratorium – US on export ban of chip systems to China

Date:

According to insiders, the US government is pushing for an export ban on certain systems of the Dutch chip industry supplier ASML to China. According to insiders, US officials have spoken out in favor of a ban on the sale of older types of systems with so-called deep ultraviolet technology (DUV).

Bloomberg reported this on Tuesday evening based on acquaintances with the case. This would extend a sales moratorium on more modern systems, it said.

Although DUV systems are not state-of-the-art, they are standard in the production of simple electronic chips for cars, smartphones, computers and many robots. Should there be an actual ban on the sale of DUV systems to China, this could reduce ASML’s sales by five to ten percent.

China is an important market for chip industry equipment suppliers such as ASML, Aixtron and Applied Materials. ASML is currently unable to send more modern EUV lithography systems to China because the Dutch government does not approve.
