What applies in customs schaos – China flirts with the EU, Trump can be celebrated

Date:

Donald Trump has made a back -up. He can celebrate like a genius within his own ranks, while the customs war continues to escalate with China. An overview of what actually applies.

The announced Chinese retribution tasks on American imports are officially in force. An additional use of 84 percent now applies to import to China from the US. So far, however, Beijing has no response to the next escalation level of the United States.

US President Donald Trump announced that the rates for input from China continue to rise to 125 percent, while at the same time uncovering certain rates to other countries.

This applies to Austria and the EU
After Trump had insisted on his aggressive trade strategy for days, he announced that all countries that did not take a retribution at the American rates will receive a gallows period by July and are only covered with a flat-rate US of 10 percent. This also applies to the EU – and therefore Austria.

However, there will remain other sanction packages, such as rates for the car, steel and aluminum industry. According to the plan, the first rates of the EU will enter into force on 15 April and refer to the measures that the US president did not withdraw.

The spokeswoman for the White House press, Karoline Leavitt, said that Trump raised the rates against China because “if they strike to the United States of America, President Trump will resonate even harder.” Trump’s Minister of Commerce Howard Lutnick said: “Never bet Donald Trump. Never bet the United States.”

His followers talk about the famous “art of the deal” of the president. However, critics quickly pointed out that Trump had not achieved anything. His previous balance: loss of value at the stock exchanges, registering rates from China, a car industry under pressure, higher costs for consumers and the fear of a recession have been booked so far.

Beijing does not want to be blackmailed
Trump justified the step by making China to the world markets according to “lack of respect”. Beijing had previously made it clear in response to the American customs tasks of the past days that it was ready to “fight to the end” and accused the US “extortion”.

At the same time, China advertises better relationships from other trading partners. As was known on Thursday by the Chinese side, EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic and Minister of Handel Wangao had spoken by telephone on Tuesday about more economic exchange to both parties.

Beijing approaches Brussels
According to the announcement, Wang emphasized that the mutual rates of the United States violate the interests of all countries and damage the global economic order. China and the EU currently protected the multilateral trading system based on rules that stabilize the world economy emphasized Wang. According to the Chinese information, both parties agreed to include consultations from market access and to create a cheaper business environment for companies as quickly as possible.

China is one of the most important trading partners of the European Union. According to Brussels, the People’s Republic was the third largest buyer of the EU exports and the country where the EU imported the most products in 2024. Last year, just like in the previous year, there was a huge trade deficit at the expense of the EU of around 300 billion euros.
