Must be safer – EU cleaning: stricter guidelines for toys

Date:

In the future, children should be better protected against dangerous chemicals in the EU. Representatives of the European Parliament and the Member States have been temporarily agreed: Children’s toys must be checked and safer in the EU.

A central element is a digital product pass that must be prescribed for every toy sold in the EU. It must provide information about security information and warnings available, for example via a QR code. Consumers, but also customs authorities, are easier to check whether toys meets the requirements.

Information via passport more accessible
“The Digital Product Pass will make important information more accessible to consumers and authorities,” says German parliament member Marion Walsmann, who was involved in the negotiations for the European Parliament. “At the same time, he gives companies the certainty that their business secrets will remain protected.”

PFAS in toys must be prohibited
In addition to well -known risks such as carcinogenic or reproductive substances, the conscious use of so -called PFAs must also be prohibited – sustainable chemicals that can gather in the environment and body. Even biocides may only be used if toys are explicitly intended for use outside.

The agreement must still be formally confirmed by the European Parliament and the Member States in the Council.
