An unannounced visit from Pope Francis in the Basilica of St. Peter caused a stir on Thursday afternoon, because this is how the Pontifex was never seen. Mobile phone videos of the performance spread on social media in no time.
For the first time since his election, the Argentinian showed itself without his official clothes. Francis did not wear a cap, but poncho and black pants. The video also raised new questions about the health status of the vulnerable.
The portal “Vatican news” did not publish any of the new recordings, but instead used an archive photo from Sunday. This shows the pope in his traditional white robe with a headgear how he crosses the holy gate into a wheelchair.
Pilgrims come to the Pope
Francis had a wheelchair to the altar and finally to the grave of the Holy Pope Pius X. He was accompanied by his personal nurse Massimiliano Strappetti. Many of the people present reacted surprised and moved to the presence of Francis’. Pilgrim groups, children, restorers and visitors respectfully flocked to the Pope to see him, to greet him or to receive his blessing. Some even stood in line to shake his hand with him or catch a smile.
Francis blessed various children, welcomed restorers who were currently working on a project and gave a smile on those present. Because of his weakened health status, he again wore a nose glass for the oxygen supply. “The emotions were so great that I could no longer see tears and not even a photo for the loud,” Valerio Di Palma, Canon by St. Peter, told the Vatican media.
Third unannounced appearance
For the third time within a week, Francis surprised with an unannounced public appearance: on 6 April he was published in a wheelchair on St. Peter’s Square and had blessed pilgrims. On Wednesday he received the British royal couple Charles III. And Camilla for a private meeting – although the appointment was previously canceled for health reasons. The pope is currently in a recovery phase of two months after a serious airway infection that had tied him to the bed for weeks.
