In Austria you don’t have to worry about the power supply. According to E-Control, the power supply was continuously protected in the past two years. Almost complete consumption can be covered by renewable energies.
The power supply of Austria was continuously protected in 2023 and 2024, despite the global uncertainties and fluctuating feed -in renewable sources. This is the result of the e-regulatory Authority of the e-control report.
Austria is Netto -exporter
In retrospect before 2023 and with preliminary figures for 2024, the report notes that Austria developed the net importer in 2022 in 2022 in 2024 in 2024. A very good year for hydropower and the strong expansion of photovoltaics were particularly crucial for this.
Electricity generation increased
More electricity was generated in Austria than consumed. The electricity generation rose to around 82 Terawatt hours (TWH), while the consumption was approximately 64.5 TWH. 95 percent of the electricity consumption can be covered by renewable energies in 2024 – a record value. In the winter year year, however, Austria remains dependent on the input.
Creation and consumption at different times
As a challenge, the e-control remains the time to state the disconnection of production and consumption. Although photovoltaisies offer high yields, especially in the afternoon and summer, most electricity is usually used in the evening and in the winter.
These temporary shifts require flexible, manageable forms of generation, such as memory water works or gas factories. In the long term, according to Haber, these must be replaced by CO₂ neutral alternatives such as large battery storage or geothermal energy.
