Because the government shortens the “special sports financing” in the Goks Act from 120 million euros per year to 110 million euros. Even with general sports financing – in 2024 that was 90 million euros – there are cuts in the Chamber. The Ministry of Sports admits this and a spokesperson did not want to give any number. Sports financing had increased considerably under the previous government and is now being returned.
Niessl warns prior to cuts
Hans Niessl, head of Sport Austria (Asskö, Sportunion, etc.), warns of the “Krone” of austerity: “Cuting in sports financing and extra burdens for sports betting providers make the sport twice: the state invests less and sponsors will return to compensate for the new taxes.”
Because the increase in gambling tax to five percent in April gambling providers caused problems with problems. Originally the increase was gradually planned until the beginning of 2026, and the burden was now increased in the middle of the financial year. The gambling providers are traditionally important supporters of sporting events and associations. Due to the sudden increase in the tax, the gambling providers escape the profit, which they have to save again in some places.
Gambling providers will sponsor less
Jürgen Irsigler, chairman of the Sports Betping Association and Admiral Boss, expects 20 to 30 percent less sponsorship from the gambling providers. As a result, a low amount with double digital million in Austria is missing. “Wedding companies are essential partners for Austrian sport. The government measures will have significant effects here,” said Irsigler. Because the higher taxes reduce the result and therefore the range for sponsorship.
Casinos boss Erwin van Lambaart also indicates a reduction in the sponsor program in a letter this week. According to reports, it will probably be halved from ten million euros to five million euros. This year the government gambling measures will burden the casinos by 30 million euros, next year it must be 65 million euros. The cutbacks will not be the same everywhere, but the group is now looking at countless partnerships.
In total there is a lot of money
All in all, the latitudes and top class sport are missing an average double -digit million amount, each in the next two years. Before that, Niessl demands at least a “strong comeback package”. “I will fight until the last moment that the sport is not faltering by the austerity course,” said former Governor of Red Burgenland.
