At the last stop of the Tyrolean dialogue series “Tourismus Forum on Tour” in Hopfgarten in the Brixental, the industry was self -confident, but also self -critical. Reasons for lack of employees and a lack of acceptance with the population were discussed.
It was a home game for the tourist state council Mario Gerber and Tyrol advertiser Karin Seiler. The last date of the newly installed format “Tourismus Forum On Tour” took place on Tuesday evening in the sports resort “The Hohe Salve” in Hopfgarten. The event was launched to hear critical voices from the population and to clarify the benefits of the tourism sector for all Tyroleans.
But artists of tourism had come that evening. You were among yourself. State councilor Gerber was convinced in his first explanation that this would change. He announced a continuation of “Tourismus Forum on Tour”, perhaps already in the fall: “Criticism must have room. We want to listen and clarify at the same time.”
Tourism students go to other professions
In Hopfgarten there were no tourism -critical voices of the public, but freely self -critical and involved speeches by tourists. One of the topics was the falling willingness of the local population for a job in the hotel and hospitality industry. “It’s funny: we have such good tourist schools in the country. Why do so few graduates stay in the department and in the country?” A visitor asked.
Her observation was confirmed by the host Manfred Plehrer. He calculated that only 20 percent of the graduates in the industry ended up at the St. Johann Tourism School. “Other companies advertise the youth more intensively. We have to learn that better,” was the finding of Pehrer, who employs 350 employees in his group of tourism.
50,000 employees in the high season
In the evening it was agreed that the annual battle for a defeat of the season had to end. Representatives of AMS and Economic Research Institute (WIFO) showed that Tyroolean tourism would no longer work without specialists from abroad. Half of the employees come from other countries. “In high season, only the sector of the catering and accommodation currently employs 50,000 people,” calculated Wifo economist Anna Burton.
Or a lack of acceptance or missing employees – the courage for self -confidence was propagated that evening. “Many young people no longer wonder how the big leisure bid is financed in Tyrol and what role tourism plays,” said Karin Seiler and then explains it using the example of leisure card that uses tens of thousands of Tyroolean: “The leisure card is only because there are tourists.” Only a mixed calculation allows it to offer their services cheaply as part of the composite card. Such relationships must be transferred.
