Russia sanctions – 14 billion oligarchs frozen in EU so far

Date:

In the course of EU sanctions against Russia, nearly €14 billion in Russian assets have now been frozen in Europe. Most of the money was secured in five countries.

The total value of the seized assets from the oligarchy and other responsible parties is 13.8 billion euros, EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders said on Tuesday. According to the Belgian, that was “huge”. But not all EU countries are equally committed to implementing the six sanctions packages against Russia so far, he criticized on the sidelines of a meeting of justice ministers in Prague.

More than twelve of the nearly EUR 14 billion were secured in five of the 27 Member States. Germany in particular plays a prominent role in this. In mid-June, the German Finance Minister, Christian Lindner, estimated the Russian assets frozen in our neighboring country at just under 4.5 billion euros. By comparison, in May, a specially deployed task force in Austria tracked down €254 million from suspected Russian oligarchs and frozen them, as the chancellery announced in an interim report on May 22.

Currently 1158 responsible persons and 98 companies and institutions are affected by the EU sanctions. Among them are Russian President Vladimir Putin and oligarchs such as Roman Abramovich. The latter had, among other things, to sell its English football club FC Chelsea to a consortium. The proceeds did not benefit him, the money is intended to support Ukrainian war victims.
