CEOE president criticizes government for looking for someone to blame for high inflation when “there isn’t”

The relationship between entrepreneurs and the government is becoming increasingly tense. The new taxes on energy companies and banks announced by the president, Pedro Sánchez, during the debate on the state of the nation have been like a pitcher of cold water in the CEOE. That anger was noted this Wednesday in the statements of its president, Antonio Garamendi, who accused the Executive of looking to blame the high inflation, and even fingering companies for it, and in counter-attack: the big beneficiary is the state.

“Looking for culprits where there are none, the government is wrong. If you have to look for someone to take advantage of inflation, it’s the state itself,” the CEOE leader said during an interview on RNE.

Garamendi stressed that the state has increased its collection by 20,000 million euros due to the rise in inflation; Moreover, the manager believes that this amount can rise to 30,000 million euros. In this sense, he recalled that this increased collection “also comes from the savings of families and people on the street” and accused the Executive of “wanting to get more”, without taking into account efficiency measures in all government services, such as reducing obstacles and bureaucratic overlaps, which could lead to savings of EUR 60,000 million.

The employer’s leader also referred to the famed income pact, acknowledging that “you can talk about it”, but in case “everyone” is involved in its implementation. “It’s not about taking something out of here and putting it there. The only way to work on inflation is to act together, not to blame anyone and say it will solve the problem. We will not solve anything in terms of inflation with these measures,” Garamendi blames the new taxes announced by the Executive.
