While many assume that most of the displaced persons from Ukraine want to return after the war, work is also underway to integrate those affected into the domestic labor market. In concrete terms, there is hope for 10,000 jobs in the ICT, catering and social sectors – a new platform of business and aid organizations now wants to contribute to this. However, the open question about the additional earning limit remains questionable.
About 47,000 displaced persons from Ukraine have been registered in Austria so far, mostly women with children. Michael Takacs, the federal government’s refugee coordinator, believes that many of those affected come from highly skilled jobs, so there’s a good chance they could use their help to reduce the shortage of skilled workers in Austria at the press conference to announce it. to present the platform.
train at the same level
Austria needs 24,000 IT specialists, training in Ukraine in this area is comparable to that in Austria, said Alfred Harl, president of the WKO specialist association for management advice, accounting and information technology (UBIT). The IT job can also be done with knowledge of English and from the home office.
Gastro offers “real jobs”
The Viennese restaurateur Berndt Querfeld advertised vacancies in the catering industry. The otherwise unpopular weekend shifts are especially an opportunity because childcare is easy to organize, he said. In any case, many “real jobs” would beckon in gastronomy. Elisabeth Anselm, general director of the Austrian aid agency, pointed out the many vacancies in social professions, especially in care and support.
Work permit only lasts a few days
Given the swift and unbureaucratic dispatch of the blue residence card and the swift granting of work permits by the AMS – within two to three days if qualifications match – Takacs assumes that everyone who needs it will obtain a work permit within two weeks at the latest.
It goes even faster if there is already a potential employer. AMS boss Johannes Kopf also pointed out in the “ZiB2” on Sunday evening that the work permits would be issued within a few days. 41 permits have now been granted.
Childcare is going to be a challenge
Despite all the enthusiasm, there are also a few barriers. According to Takacs, 80 percent of those entitled to protection are women and 35 percent are under the age of 18. In order for women to be able to work with children, childcare must first be organized. The platform also wants to help with that. In addition, there is often a lack of knowledge of German, knowledge of English was supposed to be the absolute minimum requirement, which is why the platform is also in English.
How much can be earned?
Another unresolved problem on the organizational side is the current upper limit for earning extra without dropping out of basic support. To bring this from the current 110 euros to almost 500 euros, a unanimous decision is required by the federal states.
However, Carinthia still sees unequal treatment in the proposals because different income limits may apply for asylum seekers and displaced persons from Ukraine. But that is a legal difference, so the different treatment is justified, according to Takacs.
