The domestic OMV has additional pipeline capacities for natural gas: For the coming gas year – October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2023 – additional European transmission capacities to Austria amounting to 40 TWh (terawatt hours, note) have been secured from the group on Thursday.
This corresponds to almost half of Austria’s annual requirement and covers OMV’s supply obligations in Austria. Our own storage facilities are almost 80 percent full. The transfer points for natural gas are the Oberkappel hubs in Upper Austria (pipeline from Germany) and Arnoldstein in Carinthia (pipeline from Italy).
“This is a crucial milestone in the diversification of the natural gas supply. This means that we can bring the gas we produce in Norway ourselves, but also the quantities of LNG that we have purchased (LNG stands for Liguefied Natural Gas, as liquefied natural gas, nm) to Austria if necessary and supply our customers reliably, OMV CEO Alfred Stern is quoted as saying in a press release.
OMV storage almost 80 percent full
Major progress is also being made in the field of gas storage. “After we started storing natural gas very early in March and have continued to do so consistently over the past few months, OMV’s own storage facilities are already nearly 80 percent full,” says Alfred Stern. According to the company, that is about 25 TWh.
Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) welcomes securing additional gas transport capacity “as an important step at the right time. As the federal government, together with the responsible companies, we have been doing everything for months to increase the security of gas supply and reduce dependence on Russia. ” This is also supported by the Gas Diversification Act, which aims to provide alternative gas sources by promoting the federal government.
