Gazprom means it – Russia cuts gas supply to next EU country

Date:

Russia is turning on the gas tap again – after deliveries to several European countries have already been stopped, it is now Latvia’s turn. The Russian gas company Gazprom has stopped deliveries because the conditions for gas extraction have been violated, the energy giant announced on Saturday.

The state-owned company did not provide specific details about the violations. Russia had previously stopped gas supplies to, for example, Poland and Bulgaria because they refused to pay the bill in rubles.

Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin introduced this new regulation in response to EU sanctions against Russia. Payments in euros or dollars were common – and usually stipulated in the contract.

Latvia wants to get rid of Russian gas
The Latvian government recently announced that it would completely stop importing Russian gas from January 2023. This is mainly seen as a response to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. Last year, Latvia bought about 90 percent of its gas from Russia.

Austria also gets less gas
Deliveries to Austria have also been further reduced recently – for example, only 20 percent of the possible capacity has been flowing through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline since Wednesday. This makes it even more difficult for EU countries to build up reserves for the winter. Russia again justified the reduction with necessary repairs.

However, OMV boss Alfred Stern does not see this as a serious problem. Not only are additional line capacities assured for the next gas year, but also gas to fill these lines, he assured on Thursday – so delivery is guaranteed.
