Wants more nuclear energy – German finance minister: no more electricity from gas

Date:

The German Finance Minister, Christian Lindner, calls for the end of electricity production with gas. After all, the high gas prices are also directly responsible for the increase in electricity costs, he says. Economics Secretary Robert Habeck “would have the legal authority to prevent this.” Lindner is calling for the nuclear power plants to run longer instead.

“We must ensure that the gas crisis is not accompanied by an electricity crisis,” said the FDP chairman of the “Bild am Sonntag”. “That is why gas may no longer be used for the production of electricity, as is still the case today.”

The result would probably be a blackout
A spokesperson for Economic Affairs Minister Habeck (Greens) said on Sunday: “One should not misjudge: a complete abandonment of gas in the electricity sector leads to the electricity crisis and blackouts. There are systemically important gas plants that need to be supplied with gas. they do not get gas, serious malfunctions will occur.

Unfortunately, that is the reality of the electricity system, you have to know that to guarantee security of supply.” But where gas can be replaced in electricity generation, it must be replaced – and this has been in the works for a long time.

Coal-fired power stations are likely to be ramped up
A first ordinance already makes it possible for coal-fired power stations to return to the electricity market for a limited period from the so-called grid reserve. According to the ministry, a gas-saving ordinance is also in the works to shut down non-systemically important gas-fired power plants. The lignite reserve will be activated on 1 October. Lignite-fired power plants that have already been shut down can then be put back into operation.

Three nuclear power plants still on the grid
Due to fears of cessation of Russian gas supplies, discussions are currently underway in Germany about extending the life of the last three nuclear power plants still in operation.

Union and FDP are campaigning to allow at least a limited continuation of activities after the turn of the year. The SPD and the Greens in particular are still skeptical. They also generally do not want to rule out the possibility that business operations will be continued at least temporarily in the event of a crisis.
