Concern about shortages – gas consumption dropped significantly in the first half of the year

Date:

The concern about sufficient gas supplies from Russia is reflected in the consumption data: gas consumption fell by 6.4 percent in the first half of the year to 49.1 TWh (terawatt hours), reports E-Control. This means that 3.3 TWh less gas was needed than in the same period last year. Storage extraction decreased by 34 TWh or 51 percent. With 42 TWh, more than twice as much gas was stored as in the first half of 2021.

Physical gas imports also decreased: at 192.2 TWh, they fell by about 12 percent. However, exports were also sharply reduced: at 135.2 TWh, exports were 36.4 percent less than in the first half of 2021.

Increase in power consumption
E-Control recorded an increase in electricity consumption of 0.4 percent. At 35.7 TWh, 3.4 percent more electrical energy was generated in the first half of the year than in the same period last year.

In the first half of the year, 14.1 TWh, which means 14 percent more electrical energy, was imported. Electricity exports, on the other hand, rose by 20 percent to 11.2 TWh.

Bad weather for power generation
In June, the weather had a negative effect on electricity production, which fell by 8.1 percent. Because two-thirds of electricity production comes from hydroelectric power stations. These generated 15.7 percent less energy due to the significantly below-average water supply.
